The UNIQUE ideas competition supports students, graduates, researchers and employees of the University of Greifswald and the research institutes in Greifswald and the surrounding area in developing their ideas through to the founding of a company.
The UNIQUE ideas competition was first organized in 2006 to support students, researchers and employees of the University of Greifswald in developing their ideas through to the founding of a company. Since 2020, the project, which is financed by ESF funds from the state, has been carried out by WITENO GmbH – Wissenschafts + Technologiepark NORD°OST°, as an association of start-up centers in Greifswald, in cooperation with the University of Greifswald together with the Leibniz Institute for Plasma Research and Technology e.V. (INP) Greifswald, the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics, Greifswald Subinstitute and the Friedrich Löffler Institute, Federal Research Institute for Animal Health, Insel Riems. In recent years, more than 120 teams of researchers and students have developed start-up concepts with validated potential, resulting in more than 30 companies from all areas of the university.
- Students, researchers and alumni of the University of Greifswald
- Employees of the non-university research institutes in and around Greifswald (FLI, INP, HIOH, IPP)
- Interested people with an ecological, economic and/or socially innovative start-up idea from the region
You can take part in the competition as an individual or in a team. If you are a team, at least one team member must fulfill these requirements.
No, regardless of whether your idea is already fully developed or you are still in the starting blocks or don’t even have an idea yet – you can take part in the competition at any stage. If your idea is not yet fully developed or you don’t have one yet, the Fit2Start workshop series will help you to develop your idea further and prepare the idea sketch. You can also join a team here if you don’t have your own idea. We are also happy to help you develop ideas outside of the workshops, just get in touch with us!
If you want to take part without an idea, there are two options: Either you join another idea or you develop another idea. For both options, we recommend that you take part in the Fit2Start workshops, as this is where you can meet other people interested in starting up and developing ideas. Feel free to contact us, we can put you in touch with participants who are still looking for a team!
The UNIQUE ideas competition offers all participants an exciting new experience in which they not only develop their own ideas, but also themselves. The Fit2Start workshop series and the individual advice and support throughout the competition create a motivating environment. Participants have the opportunity to meet like-minded people, exchange ideas with them and support each other. The various prizes range from financial support to non-cash prizes that help participants to implement their ideas.
Last but not least, there is not only the opportunity to further develop your business idea, but also to expand your own skills and abilities.
Our former participants can answer this question even better than we can. Take a look at the Hall of Fame page, where we asked last year’s teams about their experiences.
No, participation is free of charge.
You don’t have to have a team to take part in the competition. You can take part completely on your own, but you also have the opportunity to find team members in the Fit2Sart workshop series. You can also contact us, we may have a suitable team member in mind.
The application portal will be activated shortly.
Fit2Start is a free online workshop series that prepares you to take part in the competition. We teach you everything you need to prepare your idea sketch from scratch. In addition to design thinking, this also includes strategy and pitch training as well as market and customer analysis.
You will also get to know other people interested in founding a company and potential new team members during the workshops. The following dates are scheduled for the workshops:
Participation in the workshop series is not mandatory in order to take part in the competition. Nevertheless, we recommend that all competition participants take part in the workshop.
Yes, the UNIQUE ideas competition team will be available to answer your questions and provide advice throughout the competition. We will support you in developing your idea and your concept, give you feedback on your idea sketch and help you with your business model. As we are not part of the jury, we can support you individually and independently. Contact us by e-mail at: firstname.lastname@example.org – alternatively, you can also contact someone from our team directly.
The evaluation is carried out in several stages. In phase 1, the applications are not yet finally evaluated, only a pre-selection for the next phases takes place.
Only phase 2 and phase 3, i.e. the written idea sketches and the pitch in front of the jury, are included in the final evaluation by the jury. The evaluation of the idea sketches is sent to us by the jury members before the jury meeting, so the pitch has no subsequent effect on this part of the evaluation.
The evaluation categories for the written evaluation are (50% of the overall evaluation):
– Market potential/exploitation prospects
– Customer benefit
– Probability of realization/feasibility
– Motivation/skills of the founders/team
– Regional significance/structural impact for MV (only included in the evaluation if there is a tie)
The following categories are evaluated in the pitch to the jury:
– Presentation (10% of the total score)
– Discussion (30% of the total score)
– Founding personality/motivation (10% of the total score)
Actually, the contacts, the community and the know-how are the real prize in the competition, but we also support the three best-rated ideas financially so that you can get them off the ground. The prize money will be financed by our sponsors.
The specific prizes will be announced shortly.
The ideas competition is held at several university locations in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The winners (excluding special prizes) of the competition have another opportunity to take part in the state-wide “Inspired” ideas competition and present their idea to a panel of experts again. There are also numerous prizes here. In addition, the winners from all locations are invited to the Rock-it Week, an intensive 5-day workshop in Rostock and the Berlin Valley Tour.
You can find more information here.
Your idea was not awarded a prize, but you still want to continue? Great! Although there are only 3 places in the categories, this does not mean that only 3 of the ideas can be realized! That’s why we will remain your point of contact after the competition and support you with further development, the business plan, networking or funding applications as required.
There is also the next competition in Greifswald in the fall: the Set Sail business plan competition!
